Biomass distribution and physiological capabilities of bacteria in the water column above a sea grass system. ArchiMer
Velimirov, B; Herndl, G; Kavka, G.
The distribution pattern of bacteria in the water column above and within a Posidonia oceanica bed near Ischia (off the Gulf of Naples) was investigated and correlated with DOC and POM data for autumn and winter. Data from samples of 5 stations along a transect from shallow to deep showed rather low bacterial densities (10 super(4).ml super(-1)) for both seasons. The number of attached bacteria was higher in late winter as compared to autumn when the leaves are shed from the stands. Except for occasional peaks DOC ranged between 1.5 and 4.5 mg C/1 while POM concentrations ranged form 4 to 14 mg AFDW.1 super(-1). Hydrolytic capabilities of isolated bacterial colonies showed that more carbohydrate substrates could be fermented in winter as compared to...

Carbon Stocks in Compartments of Soil Organic Matter 31 Years after Substitution of Native Cerrado Vegetation by Agroecosystems Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Ferreira,Eloisa Aparecida Belleza; Bustamante,Mercedes Maria da Cunha; Resck,Dimas Vital Siqueira; Figueiredo,Cícero Célio de; Pinto,Alexandre de Siqueira; Malaquias,Juaci Vitória.
ABSTRACT Changes in carbon stocks in different compartments of soil organic matter of a clayey Latossolo Vermelho Distrófico (Typic Haplustox), caused by the substitution of native savanna vegetation (cerrado sensu stricto) by agroecosystems, were assessed after 31 years of cultivation. Under native vegetation, a stock of 164.5 Mg ha-1 C was estimated in the 0.00-1.00 m layer. After 31 years of cultivation, these changes in soil C stocks were detected to a depth of 0.60 m. In the case of substitution of cerrado sensu stricto by no-tillage soybean-corn rotation, a reduction of at least 11 % of the soil C pools was observed. However, the adoption of no-tillage as an alternative to tillage with a moldboard plow (conventional system) reduced CO2 emissions by...

Cellulase and xylanase activity during the decomposition of three aquatic macrophytes in a tropical oxbow lagoon BJM
Sciessere,L; Cunha-Santino,M. B; Bianchini Jr,I.
Due to the connection between enzymatic activity and degradation of different fractions of organic matter, enzyme assays can be used to estimate degradation rates of particulate and dissolved organic carbon in freshwater systems. The aim of this study was to quantify and model the enzymatic degradation involving the decomposition of macrophytes, describing temporal activity of cellulases (EC 3.2.1.4 and EC 3.2.1.91) and xylanase (EC 3.2.1.8) during in situ decomposition of three aquatic macrophytes (Salvinia sp., Eichhornia azurea and Cyperus giganteus) on the surface and water-sediment interface (w-s interface) of an oxbow lagoon (Óleo lagoon) within a natural Brazilian Savanna Reserve. Overall, the enzymatic degradation of aquatic macrophytes in Óleo...

Comparison of C and N stable isotope ratios between surface particulate organic matter and microphytoplankton in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Harmelin Vivien, M; Loizeau, Veronique; Mellon-duval, Capucine; Beker, B; Arlhac, D; Bodiguel, Xavier; Ferraton, Franck; Hermand, R; Philippon, Xavier; Salen Picard, C.
Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of particulate organic matter (POM) in surface water and 63-200 mu m-sized microphytoplankton collected at the fluorescence maximum were studied in four sites in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean), a marine area influenced by the Rhone River inputs, in May and November 2004. Some environmental (temperature, salinity) and biological (POM, Chlorophyll a and phaeopigments contents, phytoplankton biomass and composition) parameters were also analysed. Significantly different C and N isotopic signatures between surface water POM and microphytoplankton were recorded in all sites and seasons. Surface water POM presented systematically lower delta C-13 (similar to 4.2 parts per thousand) and higher delta N-15 (similar to...

Downward fluxes of particulate organic matter in coastal and oceanic areas off Chile: The role of the OMZ and functional groups of the plankton Gayana
González,H E; Daneri,G; Menschel,E; Marchant,M; Pantoja,S; Hebbeln,D; Barria,C; Vera,R; Iriarte,J.
Vertical fluxes of particles have been estimated during the last decade in coastal and oceanic systems off central-southern Chile. Free-drifting, cylindrical sediment traps have been deployed below the mixing layer from coastal areas, while automatic, cone-shaped sediment traps have been anchored in deep oceanic areas. Vertical fluxes toward 2300 m depth off Coquimbo were dominated by calcium carbonate (~70 mg m-2 d-1) instead of particulate organic carbon (POC ~7 mg m-2 d-1), where foraminifers (Neogloboquadrina pachyderma) and faecal pellets of Euphausia mucronata and Oikopleura spp, played important roles as vehicles for carbonate and carbon, respectively. In coastal upwelling systems, (i. e. Concepción), the dominant vertical flux was POC, mainly...

In coastal systems, the multiplicity of sources fueling the pool of particulate organic matter (POM) leads to divergent estimations of POM composition. Eleven systems (two littoral systems, eight embayments and semi-enclosed systems and one estuary) distributed along the three maritime façades of France were studied for two to eight years in order to quantify the relative contribution of organic matter sources to the surface-water POM pool in coastal systems. This study was based on carbon and nitrogen elemental and isotopic ratios, used for running mixing models. The POM of the estuary is dominated by terrestrial material (93% on average), whereas the POM of the other systems is dominated by phytoplankton (84% on average). Nevertheless, for the latter...

In costal systems, particulate organic matter (POM) results from a multiplicity of sources having their respective dynamics in terms of production, decomposition, transport and burial. The POM pool experiences thus considerable spatial and temporal variability. In order to better understand this variability, the present study employs statistical multivariate analyses to investigate links between POM composition and environmental forcings for a panel of twelve coastal systems distributed along the three maritime regions of France and monitored weekly to monthly for 1 to 8 years. At multi-system scale, two main gradients of POC composition have been identified: a ‘Continent-Ocean’ gradient associated with hydrodynamics, sedimentary dynamics and depth of the...

Ecologie alimentaire de l'huitre Crassostrea gigas : dynamiques des compositions isotopiques naturelles ArchiMer
Malet, Nathalie.
Trophic transfers of particulate organic matter sources to the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas were investigated in the oyster farming bay of Marennes-Oléron for two years. Stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen were used to trace the origin and fate of primary production and organic matter inputs into the bay, and to depict trophic transfers to oysters that were experimentally reared according to traditional methods. Characterizing particulate organic matter sources available for oysters utilized a combination of hydrobiological parameters and stable isotope ratios. Processes of food incorporation by oysters were described for five organs such as gills, digestive gland, mantle, muscle and gonads, and were interpreted taking into account...

Effect of particulate organic carbon on heterotrophic bacterial populations and nitrification efficiency in biological filters ArchiMer
Michaud, Luigi; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Bruni, V; Piedrahita, Raul.
Competition between heterotrophic and nitrifying bacteria is of major practical importance in aquaculture biofilter design and operation. This competition must be understood to minimize the negative impact of heterotrophic bacteria on an aquaculture system. On the other hand, the heterotrophic population is suspected of having a positive effect against pathogenic bacteria. Little information is available on the bacterial communities present within aquaculture systems, except for nitrifying bacteria, but a combination of traditional aquacultural engineering research methods and novel microbiological techniques offers new opportunities for the study of these communities. The heterotrophic bacterial population activity and the nitrification efficiency of a...

Evolutions quantitatives et qualitatives du seston dans une claire à huîtres : relation avec la sédimentation et la biodéposition ArchiMer
Sornin, Jean-marc; Delmas, Daniel; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc.

Improved procedures for extraction of water-extractable carbohydrates from particulate organic matter ArchiMer
Burdloff, D; Etcheber, H; Buscail, R.
The present work presents improvements to the existing methods for extraction of carbohydrates with water. In order to test the effects of extraction factors on the yield of carbohydrates, extractions of water-soluble carbohydrates were performed with two contrasting samples (suspended particulate organic matter from the high turbidity zone of the Gironde estuary and sedimentary organic matter from the Arcachon lagoon) under different experimental conditions. Results show that: (i) boiling water applied for 30 min yielded the best result for water-soluble carbohydrates in both samples; (ii) sonic disruption had a strong influence on the recovery rate of water-soluble carbohydrates - a steady yield was reached after a 3-min treatment; (iii) almost all the...

Protocoles d'extraction chimique de la matière organique particulaire : application au domaine estuarien ArchiMer
Etcheber, H.; Heral, Maurice; Relaxans, J. C..
There are several bio geochemical methods of studying particulate organic matter (0,45-300 µm). The main techniques employed are described ; special attention has been paid to extractive processes (chemical attack of samples and study of extracted fraction). Although these techniques are simple, various difficulties can arise : results obtained by various authors cannot be compared when techniques used differ. Furthermore the environmental interpretation of extracted functions is not always very clear. Extractive methods, which most often use harsh chemical extractants, do not provide accurate measurements of the importance of labile organic fraction. We propose therefore a series of chemical attacks of increasing strength and a correlation of results...

Temporal changes in the biochemical composition of particulate organic matter sedimentation in the Bay of Banyuls-sur-Mer ArchiMer
Gremare, A; Amouroux, Jm; Charles, F; Medernach, L; Jordana, E; Nozais, C; Vetion, G; Colomines, Jc.
Gross sedimentation rates (GSRs) were monitored together with meteorological data and the main biochemical characteristics of the collected material (i.e. organic content, C, N, total proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and available proteins) over a three year cycle at a shallow station (18 m) of the Bay of Banyuls, France. GSRs were between 0.26 (11/04/92) and 317.75 gDW m(-2) d(-1) (18/02/94). They followed an annual cycle with low and relatively constant values during spring and summer and high, variable Values during fall and winter. During the study GSRs correlated poorly (state of the sea, precipitation) or even non-significantly (wind speed) with the main meteorological parameters. GSRs correlated negatively with the organic content of the material...

Temporal variation of delta C-13 in particulate organic matter and oyster Crassostrea gigas in Marennes-Oleron Bay (France): Effect of freshwater inflow ArchiMer
Riera, P; Richard, P..
The temporal variability of delta(13)C in suspended particulate organic matter (POM) and oyster Crassostrea gigas along a salinity gradient was investigated from May 1992 to September 1993 within the estuarine bay of Marennes-Oleron (France). During this period the mean daily discharge of the Charente River exhibited large seasonal variation, with a high discharge from November 1992 to January 1993. Contrary to that at the river mouth and the marine littoral, delta(13)C in POM and in oysters at mid-estuary was affected by the high flood period. The delta(13)C values of POM decreased in mid-estuary and remained at low levels during the high discharge period, indicating an increasing contribution of terrestrial inputs to the estuarine POM pool. At the same...

Trophic relationships in a deep Mediterranean cold-water coral bank (Santa Maria di Leuca, Ionian Sea) ArchiMer
Carlier, A.; Le Guilloux, E.; Olu, Karine; Sarrazin, Jozee; Mastrototaro, F.; Taviani, M.; Clavier, J..
Cold-water corals (CWC) are frequently reported from deep sites with locally accelerated currents that enhance seabed food particle supply. Moreover, zooplankton likely account for ecologically important prey items, but their contribution to CWC diet remains unquantified. We investigated the benthic food web structure of the recently discovered Santa Maria di Leuca (SML) CWC province (300 to 1100 m depth) located in the oligotrophic northern Ionian Sea. We analyzed stable isotopes (delta C-13 and delta N-15) of the main consumers (including ubiquitous CWC species) exhibiting different feeding strategies, zooplankton, suspended particulate organic matter (POM) and sedimented organic matter (SOM). Zooplankton and POM were collected 3 m above the coral...

δ15N of organic matter sources and benthic invertebrates along an estuarine gradient in Marennes-Oleron bay (France): implications for the study of trophic structure ArchiMer
Riera, Pascal.
This study examined the delta(15)N of suspended and sedimented particulate organic matter, primary sources of organic matter and benthic invertebrates along an estuarine gradient in Marennes-Oleron Bay, France. Particular emphasis was given to the use of delta(15)N as a tracer of the origin of organic matter and as a means of determining the benthic food web structure in estuarine environments. delta(15)N values indicated that there was direct utilisation of benthic diatoms as a food source by oyster Crassostrea gigas near intertidal mudflats but suggested trophic mediation between terrestrial detritus and oysters in the upper estuarine reaches. delta(15)N data showed that the trophic position of oysters may vary in the estuarine bay. The delta(15)N values...
